When asked by Life Magazine to highlight Neil Leifer’s epic photographs of Muhammad Ali we thought to ourselves “act like you’ve been here before”. With that on our minds, we’re honoured and humbled to showcase our two favourite photographs from Leifer’s portfolio. The first may be your favourite but not his and the second is the only picture he took that hangs in his home.

“I was on assignment for Sports Illustrated when I made this photograph,” Leifer says of his now-iconic shot of a triumphant Ali exulting over a fallen Liston on May 25, 1965, in Lewiston, Maine….It’s definitely my most famous photo — but it’s not the best photograph I ever made.”

“I think this is the best picture I ever made,” Leifer says, simply and without hesitation, of a photo taken with a remote trigger from 80 feet above the ring during an Ali-Cleveland Williams fight at the Astrodome in November, 1966. “It’s the only picture of mine that I have in my home. NOTE: Neil Leifer is visible here, wearing a light blue shirt and seated near the top along the left-hand side of the ring, with his camera resting in front of him.
