No one is more deserving of a sculpture made out of 1,300 punching bags, 6.5 miles of stainless steel cable, and 2,500 pounds of aluminum pipe, than the Greatest of all-time, Muhammad Ali.

This is often regarded as one of the greatest sports photographs of the 20th century and is Leifer’s favourite photograph of his 40 year career.

When asked by Life Magazine to highlight Neil Leifer’s epic photographs of Muhammad Ali we thought to ourselves “act like you’ve been here before”. With that on our minds, we’re honoured and humbled to showcase our two favourite photographs from Leifer’s portfolio. The first may be your favourite but not his and the second is the only picture he took that hangs in his home.

Leifer’s Most Famous Photo (But Not His Favorite)

“I was on assignment for Sports Illustrated when I made this photograph,” Leifer says of his now-iconic shot of a triumphant Ali exulting over a fallen Liston on May 25, 1965, in Lewiston, Maine….It’s definitely my most famous photo — but it’s not the best photograph I ever made.”

Neil Leifer’s Favorite Shot, Ever

“I think this is the best picture I ever made,” Leifer says, simply and without hesitation, of a photo taken with a remote trigger from 80 feet above the ring during an Ali-Cleveland Williams fight at the Astrodome in November, 1966. “It’s the only picture of mine that I have in my home. NOTE: Neil Leifer is visible here, wearing a light blue shirt and seated near the top along the left-hand side of the ring, with his camera resting in front of him.
